It's a very exciting project and I can't wait to see where it takes us down the road. Today we snuck away after church and captured these together. I can't wait to hear which one is her favorite... Big Things. {Austin Life Photographer}

June has just begun and already it's shaping up to be a month of service photography. I'm currently photo-journaling a sweet friend's journey through ovarian cancer and subsequent chemotherapy treatments. She's thirty-something with two precious kids, ages 5 and 7. We just started last week on day three of her post chemo and so far it has been with great blessings. I've been able to take my daughter with me and her laughter is contagious. We don't know what will come of it all, but that's a lot like life. I'm just showing up and seeking guidance from the big Man upstairs.

In the coming weeks, I'll be shooting the Girl Scouts of Central Texas at their day camps at Zilker park and at a special event called ChannelOne. I love working with the girls. They are an amazing bunch and a wonderful community.

And later still, I'll be working with the local version of Vacation Bible School. I can't wait to participate!

And meanwhile, some friends and I are working on a coffee table book idea. and my blog is being revamped. Big things happening, my friends. Be sure to hold on to your hats and stay tuned!

Nashville Sessions: The N's. {Austin Travel Photographer}

Adorable kids + wet conditions + windy roads = my most dangerous session ever. My stomach was in knots the whole time we followed the children being little explorers. My favorite parts were watching new walker L walk with his arms held high for balance and my saddest parts were watching him fall down every three steps, but that's the life of a new walker and he's going through the thick of growing pains. "A" sang "I know you" from Sleeping Beauty and showed me some fabulous ballerina dance moves. We had the best time together. Sometimes - to really enjoy life - you'll find yourself living on the edge. Enjoy the sneak peek and the last of the Nashville sessions.

There aren't words to express how much light these girls spread to the world. Precious. Beautiful. Funny. And just plain Gorgeous. They are the daughters of an ol' pal who used to join us for X-Files viewing parties in Nashville, later we'd go up to the dive bar and shoot darts, drink beer and scheme about whose yard we could fork and get away with it. We never forked any one for real, we just had fun playing the role of pranksters on T.V. :-)

A Major's Return from Afghanistan {Army Family Photographer}

I'd been wanting to go back to Nashville for years now, but it was my Internet friend, Ame, who sealed the deal when she asked me to come photograph her main squeeze's return from the war in Afghanistan. Ame and I had been following each other's blogs for the past three years and I knew her kids were adorable, but I tell you when her son met me on the sidewalk and gave me a big ol' bear hug with his sweet chubby arms squeezed tightly around my neck I could have died and gone to heaven right then. Immediately I could tell this boy was super special. I already knew his mom had the kind of outlook on life that I admire and her authentic way of living even in the hardest of circumstances made her hands down my hero. Her husband has been overseas fighting for 15 months. In that time, her son grew to be 3 years and 8 months and their daughter 20 months. I'd known these kids all of two seconds in real life and I couldn't imagine the sacrifice it takes to be their flesh and blood and leave them for my country. I just sob thinking about it. What a hero!
I have so much gratitude in my heart for your service, Scott (and AME!!). Thank you!

I could go on and on about how much Nashville means to me and what a big role it has played in my life and the person you see today, but I'll keep this short and focus on the sneak peeks at hand. I stayed with this sweet family while meeting up with friends here and there and everywhere and driving all over town to see how much things had changed and how much things had stayed the same. I absolutely adore their daughter! I was blessed to be able to babysit her when she was under a year and it's crazy how much what I knew of her then remains the same. Her tiny hands and feet, for instance and her big blue eyes with the de-loveliest of lashes. The Dad in these pictures is an amazing photographic artist himself so I was more than a little nervous to do things "just right." :-) The good news is that in photography pretty much anything goes. These next cool cats started out as friends of friends that all went to Baylor but migrated to Nashville. The Dad is a true crack up and a great sport. He wanted direction and so when I told them all to sit down, hold hands and sing Kumbahya, they happily obliged.

Next up are incredible friends of mine. There's no way I could have survived the software company for as long as I did without Stuart sitting in the next cube over. And if I hadn't worked there four years, then I wouldn't have met my husband so case closed on how critical one decision is on the journey of your life. :-) It's a bonus that I remember the day he came back from the local bookstore and said he'd met someone special. That special someone was Mary and all of us in the marketing department got to hear Stu's favorite Sixpence None The Richer over and over and over again. Ah, young love and the song entitled, "Kiss Me."

Faux-Toes loves graceful little girls and when Ms. Danielle Richard of My Time Ballet in Lakeway requested we be there to shoot the girl's dance rehearsal my heart leaped at the opportunity. Community Service

I love giving back. I think it is one of the most important things we can do as human beings walking on the face of the planet. So two weeks ago when my good friend, Sarah Mueller, asked me to participate in Career Day at Hudson Bend Middle School, I eagerly said, "SIGN ME UP!" Middle School is so damn awkward that I know God has a.) a sense of humor and b.) always a plan and purpose.
So I spoke for two hours in twenty minute segments to different groups all about the joys of pursuing your passion and what I love about photography. Interest levels ebbed and flowed throughout the morning, but everyone's ears perked up when I said I'd happily take their FauxToes! And that's when I got these beauties:

If I was able to inspire just one to follow their heart, I call that a morning well spent. I know I sure had fun seeing new faces and sharing the delights of my career choice.

This beautiful family rocks. We met up on a gorgeous night down by the river in River Place of Austin and had the best time together. The mom and I go way back to the glory days of Baylor and sorority life. It's safe to say we've come a long way since then. I adore her family. Pay It Forward

Last Fall Eric Doggett introduced me to a very cool project he was working on through renown photographer John Michael Cooper of Alt F photography in Las Vegas. The idea is that a photographer finds another photographer's family to photograph. The recipient photographer gets a wall size canvas and all the files the only catch is that he or she has to pay it forward to another photographer's family and keep it going. I was so excited and thrilled beyond belief with my prize family portrait by Eric:

For months I've been planning to shoot Shannon. Last night it all came together and they met me at the fairgrounds in South Austin. I can't wait to see her pay-it-forward shoot in the months to come.

Fairies and bluebonnets and Pneumonia. WHAT?!?

These are the days I hope to remember. Rosa Jane awakes before the sun pitter patters into our room with heavy breathing asking for her daddy and "where's my magic wand?" It's like she has to report for Princess duty by 6:30 am or else the princess and fairies in Sleeping Beauty will never recognize her for who she truly is. She thinks the clothes make the girl.

Last fall Rosa Jane and her daddy planted bluebonnets. Yesterday I wanted to get pictures of the girl and her mother's dog. So here they are. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Last night at dinner, RJ was clearly struggling to stay awake. By 7:30 she was shivery and feverish. The poor girls fever spiked to 104 and stayed high throughout the night. This morning's doctor visit relays that she has pneumonia. I wish her a very speedy recovery. There are few things worse than seeing your child suffer without being able to do anything to make it better. Get well soon, sweetheart. Your Mama and Daddy love you very much.

No pressure, right? No wonder this is one of my most asked questions! I like to believe that my clients come to me because they like me and my sense of style. So when I had my family portraits done, we wore this (me in my favorite jacket of all time and I just asked darling husband to coordinate with it, RJ was wearing a brown dress with patches on top -- keeping in the same tone, but with this being our favorite from the shoot, it didn't even matter what she wore. She could be naked. HAHA:

Being a photographer definitely has its priviledges! We met up with Lisa and her adorable brown-eyed sidekicks yesterday in a field of shady bluebonnets yesterday morning. Lisa is an amazing wedding and portrait photographer in Austin and I just adore her work. I more so adore her person and can't wait to get to know her better. I sense this is the beginning of very long friendship and professional partnership of sorts. I am especially smitten with those aforementioned brown-eyed knee-highs to the grasshopper. They are sparky and a wee bit shy at first.

Together we really are making a difference! Last month Faux-Toes photographed each and every child at Kids R Kids on the Lake Travis campus individually and collectively with their class. This week we've been busy processing orders and collecting cereal boxes for the Free Faux-Toes class photo giveaway! I picked up 65 boxes today and can't wait to deliver them to the Lake Travis Crisis Ministries. I am so thrilled with the turnout for this operation and can't wait to see what we come up with next time for the Fall Faux-Toes in late September. Stay tuned! and so many thanks!

A Visit from Lindsay the Great. Faux-Toes: Austin's Sparkiest Portrait Photography

Last fall, I began talks with my dear friend from New England School of Photography (NESOP) in Boston about her visit to our fair city from her frozen tundra near Princeton, NJ. I've been trying to convince her along with another friend to move to Austin where everything is mighty fine. Finally this week arrived and we've been having more fun that I ever could have imagined. First off, she's an amazing artist and it's been so inspiring to have her point of view rubbing off on me. Over the last week, we've been to the Austin Rodeo and several shows at SXSW. I can't believe how lucky we've been with the weather and she's seen with her own eyes the loveliest of all Texas gems: the bluebonnet in bloom. Tomorrow is her last full day and I can't wait to see what's in store for us. This evening she let me point the camera at her and I think we captured some really great ones.

Springing Ahead!

Boy, oh, boy is the year flying by! It seems like just yesterday we were falling back on the clocks. I was not so excited this time around, but so far it is proving to be advantageous in the Roedner household. The kid has been sleeping nearly 12 hours and don't we all know how much joy that translates into during the day. Yes, our days are filled with talk of Phillip and Ferdinand and Prince Charming... the boyfriends of those beloved Disney Princesses and "remember that time that Ariel called Flounder a guppy?" Yes, that was funny, RJ. Really, funny.

I spied some bluebonnets here and there and we even have some growing in the yard thanks to donr and RJ's efforts last fall. My hairdresser recently inspired me to add a little violet to my hair and it's been so fun to shake things up.

I just love this time of year when barren trees are bursting with new blooms and hundreds of variations of green. It reminds me of the hundreds of variations of love.

Saving the Best for Last

Okay, so it's not like the others weren't The CUTEST, it's just that I have a thing for chubby cheeked roly poly babies that get into mischief and Rachel's twins fit the bill perfectly! It didn't help that she had them dressed straight off the mannequin from the boutique shop and who can resist such cuteness? Certainly Kristen Roedner from FauxToes cannot... so enjoy my friends... these are my new favorites and these babies are the bee's knees.

Sneak Peek from the FauxToes' Road Sessions

FauxToes headed to Houston last weekend to catch up with some old friends and capture spitting images to bedeck their walls and preserve this moment in time. Boy, oh, boy did we see some spitting images reflected in the eyes of a child!

This was my first trip home since last August, pre-Hurricane. I was surprised by how sad the wounded trees made me feel. Hurricane Ike struck Liberty five months ago, but there are still many signs of the wreckage left behind -- fallen trees budding, signs wrecked and dangling, and roofs covered with tarps. FauxToes will donate a portion of sales profits from these sessions and sessions throughout 2009 directly to the Gulf Coast Ike Relief fund.

Last night I attend my first Pictage Users Group in Austin. It was an amaizng experience where we talked about different strobe lighting techniques and shared ideas and new found discoveries from those that attending the Las Vegas Photography show called WPPI earlier this week.

It struck me as I was talking about stuff with the amazing Bonnie Berry of Bonnie Berry Photography that photography is the most challenging and more rewarding thing I've ever done. It's not for the faint of heart and takes great perseverance for excellence and is never dull. It's great to have a community of people to discuss the technical side with. The fun part is working with the clients and getting to know new faces and capturing those amazing moments. I'm planning to prioritize these monthly get togethers there's no telling what I'll learn next!

Fun Times at the 'School!

FauxToes had the most amazingly fun time at the local preschool last week. We captured 170 kids over the course of the week. This week, we'll be editing and processing. Parents can expect to have proofs in hand during the last week of February. Orders will be processed a week later and final prints will be received by April. We made so many adorable new friends and it was so rewarding to get those big hugs afterwards. A special thank you goes to Kathy Mennan and Chrisi Forest for all their help along with all the teachers. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Eating, Sleeping, Breathing Photography in February

Hold on to your hats, folks, February is going to be one WILD ride! I'm so excited about the many projects on the table at Faux-Toes that I just had to share! This weekend my best friend from Grey Finch Photography and Design is visiting from Amarillo. We're heading to a Twin One Year birthday bash on Saturday where we'll set up a photobooth and get some great candids of the gathering of both sides of the family. The mom says this is the first time they'll all be together since the wedding. How exciting to see the family line in action!

Next stop we'll be at my daughter's school all week long for school portraits with personality. I'm excited to be associated with Theo from Thao D. Tran Photography. The follow weekend a trip to my hometown of Liberty and the Greater Houston Area launches the Faux-Toes shoot tour. So stinkin' exciting!! I'll be visiting and catching up with old friends all the while capturing some amazingly beautiful and magical photos of their loved ones which then quickly become my loved ones! Hold on to your socks, my friends, there's more!!

Best Friends

My daughter and her best friend W love to play and play and laugh and laugh together. It's so fun when your child connects with a friend and it helps make their world run smoother. January has been a month of transition for us in the Roedner household. Dad went back to work and Mom started working more. For many reasons our friends have helped us get through it with flying colors. Life is a great big adventure where everyday is a blessing. I can't wait to see where the path will take us next. May the second month of 2009 hold great things for you, too, friends!

How to Take a Great Portrait of Your Dog

Monday we'll be speaking to some very special girls with the local 4H Club on how to take a great portrait of your dog. I love pet photography and I can't wait to share some of my creative ideas on how to get a portrait of your dog that says something about him or her to whoever the viewer of the photograph is. The girls will later take my tips and tricks and apply them to their own photographs and hopefully, we'll hear of one of them winning the photography contest taking place in late March.

Sweet Momma S had no idea I was going to surprise her with Faux-Toes on Monday. She and I attended Baylor together and got to know one another when we "pledged" the same rockin', down-to-earth sorority. She's a dear friend and I was excited when we got in touch on FaceBook last year and she relayed the news they were moving to Austin. I've been to her house twice now: once on a blazin' hot day and once on a freezin' cold day. We're already planning and scheming a family portrait in the bluebonnets in April. It just goes to show... it never is too early to start planning!

I Get by with a Little Help from my Friends

Nobody said motherhood was easy, that's why last year I joined a group called Mom2Mom at my church which has done amazing things in my life. First and foremost it introduced me to a wonderful local community of moms who are in the same boat and it follows a Christ-influenced doctrine. I've meet some of the most beautiful women inside and out through the group and I can never get enough. We're currently on a month-long break and my weeks just aren't the same without it. It gives me great peace of mind knowing, too, that my daughter is completely loved on and misses it almost as much as I do.

I met my next client through a friend of a friend through Mom2Mom and as you can tell... she and her family are gorgeous! Faux-Toes is up and running after a brief vacay at the end of the year. What an amazing year it was, too. It leads me to believe that it can only get better in 2009 and I'm so super psyched! Friday I spent the morning with my lovely childhood BFF. They came down from Georgetown. Everyday I thank my lucky stars for having a friend like Laurie in my life. She's crafty and loves, loves, loves rainbows probably slightly more than me. And pigs. So we now have twinkie flying pigs that someday soon we'll paint. Laurie is a great listener and always inspiring. Thanks, Laurie!

I am helping a dear friend out with her twins and sitting for the girls on Tuesday and Thursday. These girls have me wrapped around their fingers. Anything they want is my command. "As You Wish."

As a celebrator of life and individuality I enjoy spending time around the family during the holidays. I try to savor every minute with what are now our elders, which is really my parent's generation. I lost both sets of grandparents years ago through debilitating disease like Alzheimer's and Parkingson's. But seeing my nephew who looks just like my grandfather, it begs the question if he also acts the same. I'm dying to *really* know how our grandparents and so on and so forth acted as a child. I don't know if it's just me, but I'd love to have seen the toddler President George Bush. I just think it would be hilarious and so telling. So insightful to the person they are today. My grandmother with Alzheimer's lived with us during my tumultuous high school years. She'd always ask me if I was really going to wear my hair (longer on one side)like that, and if I was really going to leave the house in that outfit. She also always wanted "a little bit of color: on her dinner plate. which meant she really wanted some kind of brightly/artificially colored Jello salad concoction on her plate. I think of her often and feel sad that I really never did "know" her b/c by the time I was of age to know her, she'd already lost most of her personality. Still I was thinking of her this morning as I dressed as brightly as a rainbow. I wonder if she also loved colorful clothes and if I got that from her.

I like to think so. Happy Thanksgiving... belatedly, but with a very full heart.

I adore families and this here was a fabulous family with which to spend a little bit of Thanksgiving weekend 2008. The great big world got a heck of a lot smaller when we started putting the pieces together of our circle of friends. At two years old, Little Logan is much like the Forty-two year olds I've seen that don't like to have their picture taken. Despite his reluctance, I think we captured a little bit of magic on this fine Saturday. I'll let Mom be the final judge. I just think it's amazing how many different types of people there are and I celebrate each and every one in every bit of their individual glory, that includes the reluctant ones before my lens. I am always amazed by babies and their individuality and their personalities that shine as soon as they breathe oxygen and blink their eyes. I first photographed these precious twins when they were some seven weeks old. Now they are 9 months and getting into mischief. I consider it a huge blessing to not only work for families, but to become their friend and get these little sneak peeks into the lives of these little people. I adore the shorties! Even if they occasionally eat mulch and spit up curdled milk. Dontcha love the mom that dresses her children in spit-up camouflage. One smart cookie, I'll say!

This momma and I go way back to college days where we were very good friends. Then we lived on different coasts for a while. Last summer she surprised me with the very good news that they would be moving to our town. That's right -- it's our town when you move there first. ;-) I was thrilled. For me, it's always hard to get that post card in the mail with the photo of your best friend's little baby. It's hard because with it comes the pain of knowing that you many never get to hold that tiny precious baby, or really know her for that matter. But God (some might call it Dell) had different plans for us and I am so thankful and so very blessed. K, your family is lovely and I'm honored to be able to capture little sparkling pieces of magic for you... Plus it's nice to be called "a little positive energy engine" by your husband with an New Zealand accent. I know why you love him!

We were off to what their mother would have called a "questionable" start, but I knew better than to give up at the first sight of tears. We just took it easy and gave the kids something to eat and the sun just kept on doing it's thing. By the time we started shooting the sun was perfect! I'm in love with the setting sun and with their little boy whose personality just explodes onto any given scene.

It's funny, I start to think that I have a very favorite age to work with and then a new age comes into the picture and Bam! That's my favorite! This past week my daughter and I celebrated our birthdays. We are 24 hours apart and it's so fun to share this bond with her. She has become a little recording of me. I get to go first and then on her day I hear her repeating many of things I said to make sure no one forgot it was MY special day. This is just one of the many things that makes parenthood exhilarating and so damn frightening at the same time. Shame on the parent not on their best behavior at all times, no?

I'm feeling extra thankful for a wonderful trip down to Crystal Beach. We had a wonderful stay despite being chased away by hurricane Edouard. We spent an extra day in Liberty and then went back for the most fun time. We returned only to truly enjoy every second of all that is fantastic about life on a beach for a short period of time sans the condiments. Of All the Little Girls in All the World

this is the one that I love the most. She's mine. Last evening we went for a little hike in the woods to scout locations for an upcoming shoot. Rosa Jane was having so much fun running fast, fast, fast on the trail. She kept talking about "remember that time when I scraped my knee and then I had to walk like this..." and she'd scoot her feet without bending her knees. I said I remember that time. What a trooper you were! You didn't even cry that much after you belly-flopped off the slide made for 5 yr olds at the local city park.

So we're walking along the path when it forks. She takes off ahead of me and I go to the left. Always left of center. And said, we're going this way, Tiger! So she scurried down the path down a little hill and missed her footing. Smack! She tripped and fell and bloodied her knee pretty good. I felt awful for her -- big alligator tears rolling down her cheeks. Of course I didn't get what I came for and since we were the furtherest from the car I just had to snap some pictures. The results are beautiful settings with a sad girl. See for yourself. We came home promptly... as fast as I could carry a 32 lb girl and all my gear .75 mile and hopped into the bath. I think the Dora band-aid made it all better. The girl truly amazes me with her tolerance for pain. It kinda scares me.

It is a really special treat to photograph my best friend while she's pregnant carrying twin girls! It's so exciting! When I asked her what's the best part she's looking forward to, she replied seeing their faces. I can't wait for that part, too, friend.
